Freedom At Last

Omar’s New Beginning

In a small, bare room with a Bible verse taped to the wall, Omar celebrated his 48th birthday — his first birthday free from drugs in more than 30 years. “There was no cake or music,” Omar recalls. “But there was freedom.”

Omar’s addiction began when he was just 15 years old with marijuana, and by 19 it had deepened into cocaine use. Over time, the life he had built began to fall apart.

“I used to be a responsible man,” he says. “I had a home, a family, work. But when I lost all of that, the drugs took over completely.”
Eventually, his wife and three children moved to Italy to begin a new life without him.

“That silence in my house… it was like a scream I couldn’t silence.”

Omar found himself living on the streets of Medellín, Colombia surviving day by day by selling peanuts and trash bags. “When I had a little money, I used it to get high again. I couldn’t break the cycle.”

But God was not finished with Omar’s story. Everything began to change when he entered Relación con Esperanza, a Christian rehabilitation centre. During his time there, he began attending a church in Envigado.

“From the first service, I felt something different,” Omar says. “The pastor doesn’t just preach — he listens. He challenges you.”
For the first time, Omar began to truly understand the Bible.

Through these materials and the support of the church community, Omar encountered the life-changing message of God’s Word.
Today, he begins every morning reading the Psalms. “I never want drugs to rule my spirit again,” Omar says. “I want the Holy Spirit in charge.”

One verse has become his anchor: John 3:16. “It reminds me that I am forgiven. That God gave His Son so I could start again.”

Today, Omar lives with renewed hope — and deep gratitude for those who helped place God’s Word in his hands. “To those who give,” he says, “you are filled with the Spirit. Thanks to you, there’s hope this time. This time, there’s a future.”

Pray for Omar and others across Colombia who are seeking freedom from addiction and a new beginning in Christ. Ask God to strengthen him daily, protect him from relapse, and continue restoring what was lost. Pray that many who feel trapped and without hope would encounter the same life-changing power of God’s Word—and find true freedom, healing, and a future in Him.
