In the community of La Herrera–San Antonio in Colombia, life is often a daily struggle against hunger, crime, and despair.
“The children here need affirmation,” says Gina Narváez. Many grow up in difficult circumstances—some searching for food wherever they can find it, others missing school, surrounded by addictions and violent patterns they are at risk of repeating.
Yet in this challenging place, God is at work.
Years ago, Leonardo Escalante sensed God calling him to shepherd people in his community, but he resisted the call. “I could no longer run,” Leonardo recalls.
Two years ago, the call became undeniable. Leonardo and his family opened their home for Bible study. Soon the small space filled with people eager to hear God’s Word.
When there was no room left inside, the group began meeting outside—even in the rain—gathering under a large mango tree. Rather than cutting the tree down, they built the altar around it. Today it stands as a living reminder that God can preserve life even in the harshest places.

Through Bible League materials, Leonardo and Gina are discipling the children of their community. Many who once had little hope are now discovering purpose. Some sing in worship, others share Bible verses, and a few are already learning to lead.
“One boy even dreams of directing the main church service,” Gina says.
The needs in La Herrera–San Antonio remain great—food, safety, and opportunities for the children are still urgently needed. But through the faithful witness of this small church, hope is growing.
“We just let God guide us,” Leonardo says. And under that mango tree, a powerful truth is becoming clear: where the enemy once tried to destroy, God is planting seeds of new life.
Pray for the families of La Herrera–San Antonio, where many children are growing up surrounded by hardship, hunger, and harmful influences. Ask God to protect these young lives, to break cycles of violence and addiction, and to provide for their daily needs. Pray also for Leonardo, Gina, and their small but faithful church—that God would strengthen them, expand their ministry, and raise up new leaders from among the children. And pray that under that mango tree, and throughout the community, God’s Word would continue to take root—bringing hope, healing, and lasting transformation through His Church in Colombia.
