Disaster Brings Hope
Earlier this year in March, Cyclone Idai caused catastrophic damage to Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The heavy rains and strong winds led to flash flooding, taking the lives of 1,300 people and leaving thousands missing. For those who did survive, life was tough. Cyclone Idai destroyed properties and crops leaving many to suffer without sufficient food, water and shelter.
In the Beira region of Mozambique, Bible League distributed “relief Bibles” to bring hope to everyone in the shelters, including 45-year-old Judite.
“It was a sad and painful situation,” reflects Judite. “Around 2:00AM a strong storm hit our house and, in a few moments, we saw the roofing of the house flying off. I saw homes in our neighbourhood in the same situation and others were even worse because the entire buildings were destroyed. Trees had fallen on top of the houses, cars, and people.”
When she was ushered into the temporary accommodation shelter, Judite was given a Bible. But at first, she wasn’t interested. It remained unopened for weeks. Then one day she decided to open it. She read John 3 and had a breakthrough.
“I looked back at my life and realised that I was out of the light, I was not born again and I deserved condemnation,” she says.
In her darkest circumstances, Judite sees how God was working in her life.
“I didn’t understand why I received my Bible, but now, I do understand that God was calling me to come out from the darkness to the light,” she says. “Thank you Bible League for giving me the Word of God. It has changed my life.”

Call to Prayer: Pray for others who received a Bible at the cyclone shelter to also read God’s Word and come to know His love and salvation.
The ministry of Bible League New Zealand is able to plant God’s Word solely through the generous support of the Christian community.
