For many people living with blindness in the village of Butiama in north-west Tanzania, life has often been marked by isolation and spiritual darkness. An unusually high number of people in the community are blind or visually impaired, and many believe the village is under a curse.
Among them was Margareth Marwa, who once practised witchcraft and lived a lonely life, feared by those around her. But today, her story is very different.
Through Bible League’s ministry, Margareth joined a local Bible study group led by Pastor Siro, who himself is blind in one eye. Since most group members cannot read printed Scripture, the group listens together using an audio Bible. As they gather to hear God’s Word, many are discovering the hope and freedom found in Jesus Christ.

During one study, the group listened to Deuteronomy 7:6: “For you are a holy people who belong to the Lord your God.” The words deeply moved the participants. Many shared how their lives had changed since coming to faith in Christ, turning away from fear, witchcraft, and spiritual darkness.
One participant explained, “Belonging to God’s people means we are now a testimony to others. People can see that we no longer live the way we used to.”
At the end of the Bible study program, the participants experienced another moment of great joy—they each received their own audio Bible. Carefully helping one another to the front, they held the devices with excitement and gratitude. For many, it meant they could now continue listening to God’s Word at home and even share it with neighbours and family members.
Margareth was overwhelmed with joy as she received hers. “People outside have no idea what joy and goodness I have found here,” she shared. “I love Jesus, and I feel responsible to help others know Him too.”
Through audio Bibles and small group Bible studies, people who once felt forgotten are discovering that they are truly seen, loved, and called by God.
