Lanfen* shares how she enrolled in Bible-based Literacy,

“For a long time I wished I could understand English better, until I accidentally heard about the Bible League literacy class in the social centre in our city. English was taught in such a systematic and easy way that I could easily understand. Now my son, Stanley, and I attend the Bible-based literacy program every Saturday morning, same time in different rooms.

As a new immigrant growing up and studying in mainland China, I am so helpless in adapting to the new environment. I found not much hope in good English studies. I felt so frustrated that I am not able to help my son in English. After graduation from high school long ago, I have few opportunities to practise and use my very limited English, since the local business is not using English on a daily business. I wanted to learn English in order to teach my children.”

English Literacy Classes in Bible College

literacy-classesA seminary may seem like an unlikely place to teach Bible-based Literacy, but our partners in China realise that because of the low number of pastors available in churches throughout China, it may be a valuable skill to have in order to educate the nation with English and the gospel. The ratio of 1 pastor to 19 churches means that each of the seminary graduates will not only get to share the gospel with a keen and waiting congregation, but they will be highly in demand in terms of their skills and ability to teach Bible-based Literacy too.

Church Programs Winning Lives for Christ

church-programsSince 1997 at least 150 migrants per day have been moving from mainland China to Hong Kong. Many young women often marry men, even older men, in order to be able to get their “ticket” out of mainland China.

One young mother, Judy*, did exactly this and managed to make a better life for herself and her son, Calvin*. However, when they moved, Calvin was learning English at school, but he couldn’t practise his English as his mother was unable to speak any other language besides Mandarin. Judy heard about the Bible League Bible-based Literacy class and decided to enrol in order to learn English. As a result, today her and Calvin can chat fluently to each other and his English too has improved due to his ability to practise with his Mum.
